Of all Myanmar handicrafts, lacquerware is the most distinctive and Bagan is the center of lacquerware manufacturing in central Myanmar. So, visitors can buy quality lacquerware with reasonable prices. There are many lacquerware workshops or shops to visit in Bagan.

U Ba Nyein Lacquerware Workshop

U Ba Nyein Lacquerware Workshop has a large showroom to display the best items they have to offer. Everything from plates to cups, ashtrays to vases, jewelry boxes and furniture (lacquer tables and chairs) can be found here.

1517 Group Handicraft Shop

At 1517 Group Handicraft Shop at Wet Kyi Inn village in Old Bagan, Lacquerware, sandalwood, woodcarvings and Glass mosaic are available. It's a shoppers' destination where both wood carving and lacquerware making processes can be studied at the same time.

Bagan House

Bagan House souvenir shop is situated in Kyansitthar ward in New Bagan. The artworks are exclusively displayed and for sale in its elegant structure. The merchandise is beautiful and the prices accessible. Its peaceful garden is an attraction to visitors too. Visitors are invited to watch the process of lacquermaking through the stages.

Situated on Bagan-Nyaung U Airport road in New Bagn and near Tamanay pagoda, Shweleik Min souvenir shop sells variety of quality lacquer products. It offers visitors a chance to observe lacquerware making process.

Shwe War Thein Handicrafts Shop

Shwe War Thein is considered as one of the best souvenir shops in the region. This shopping destination is the place to go for truly exquisite items. Its merchandise includes puppets (antique and new), wood carvings, chess sets, lacquerware, bronze pieces and gems. The staff members are passionate about the products they sell, but customers will never feel pressure to buy.

Local Markets

To have an insight into a daily life of the locals and experience wonderful chaos, Ma Ni Si Thu market in Nyaung Oo and New Bagan market are worth visiting. The market has it all; local produce, cultural items, fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and meat, as well as fabrics, crafts, pottery, rattan products, flowers and food. They're full of life, lots of color and activities. It's fantastic just to walk through and check out people and their wares and produce, taste local delicacies at your leisure. The best time to visit these local markets is in the morning. One thing to note is that both markets are closed on full moon day, new moon day and two half-moon days.
